Poverty is a major problem in the United States today. Social, economical, political, and cultural factors all contribute to poverty. Education and economic development are two major issues that will help prevent poverty. The United States Census Bureau defines poverty as an economic condition in which people lack sufficient income to obtain basic needs for food, housing, clothing, health services and education. In other words, poverty is powerlessness, a lack of representation and freedom. Poverty is an issue that the world faces everyday. There are two ways to categorize poverty in a sociologist viewpoint. Absolute poverty simply refers to the condition in which one is unable to afford the necessities of life, whereas relative†¦show more content†¦Some families think that crime has better incentives than working a low paying job and thus crime could be put in as an economic factor that leads to poverty. Not having enough money for programs like education leads to the ind ividual behavior of illiteracy and lower education, since the parents cannot afford to send their children to upper level education. And if these children know that they have no future in higher education, they will not have the motivation to do well in school and thus dropping out of school. In turn this will lead to having low self-esteem because they know that they will basically be stuck in poverty for the rest of their lives. This can eventually lead to substance abuse because they need something to overcome their high levels of stress that is produced by low-self esteem. In turn substance abuse could lead to sickness and disease, and then could possibly lead to mental illness. Once this happens, individual behavior will cause families to be in poverty. For social factors, discrimination would be the variable that causes poverty. Racial discrimination from an employer could lead for that person to not receive a higher paying job, in which could lead to violence from the potenti al employee towards the employer. In turn crime could be committed in rejection of the employer. Thus the social factor of violence interconnects with the economic factor of crime. Damien Peter Parer (1 August 1912 – 17 September 1944) was an Australian war photographer. He became famous for his war photography of the Second World War, and was killed by Japanese machinegun fire at Peleliu, Palau. He married Elizabeth Marie Cotter on 23 March 1944, and his son, producer Damien Parer, was born posthumously. He was cinematographer for Australia’s first Oscar winning film, Kokoda Front Line, an edition of the weekly newsreel, Cinesound Review which was produced by Ken Hall. Damien Parer was born at Malvern in Melbourne, the tenth child of Teresa and John Arthur Parer, a hotel manager on King Island, Tasmania. In 1923, he and his brother, Adrian, were sent as boarders to St Stanislaus’ College in Bathurst and St. Kevin’s College, Melbourne . He joined the school’s camera club, and decided that he wanted to be a photographer, rather than a priest. However, finding a job as a photographer in depression-era Australia proved difficult, and so he resumed his education at St Kevin’s in east Melbourne. While at this school he won a prize in a photographic competition run by the Melbourne newspaper, the Argus, and used the money to buy a Graflex camera used by professionals. Parer obtained an apprenticeship with Arthur Dickinson. He said later that he learnt most about photography from Dickinson and Max Dupain. He finished his apprenticeship in 1933 and, sometime later, obtained work with the director, Charles Chauvel, on the film Heritage, where he met and became friends with another up and coming filmmaker of the time, John Heyer. At the conclusion of that film, and with the help of Chauvel, he obtained work in Sydney, and so moved there in 1935. By World War II, Parer was experienced at photography and motion pictures, and was appointed as official movie photographer to the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). His first war footage was taken on HMAS Sydney after it had sunk the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni. Soon after, he was aboard HMS Ladybird while it was bombarding the sea port of Bardia in Libya. His first experience at close quarters was during a troop advance at Derna. Parer filmed in Greece and in Syria, covering the action from aircraft, the deck of a ship and on the ground with the infantry. After Syria he travelled to Tobruk in August 1941 before covering the fighting in the Western desert. By mid-1942 Parer was in New Guinea ready to cover the fighting against the Japanese. During this phase of the war, he filmed some of his most famous sequences, some at Salamaua and, most notably, those used in Kokoda Front Line. This documentary won its producer, Ken G. It is looked down upon highly by academics and it carries with it many serious consequences. Over the past five years, the Internet has emerged as a cheaters dream and a professors worst nightmare. Its because of a variety of web sites that give students access to entire papers for a nominal fee and sometimes even for free. As a result of the widening accessibility of the Internet, as well as the new mediums lack of regulation, a student can click a few computer buttons and in a matter of minutes, they can download a well-crafted term paper without having to pick up a single book. It seems as though the Internet has totally changed the meaning of the word research. Plagiarism can formally be defined as: repeating the authors sentences as your own; adopting a particularly apt phrase as your own; paraphrasing someone elses argument as your own; presenting someone elses link of thinking in the development of a thesis as though it were your own (Modern Language Association). Although a writer may use anothers words and thoughts, they must be acknowledged as such. The act of plagiarism in school is nothing new. In the days before the Internet, plagiarism occurred in colleges and universities across the country in the form of Cliffs Notes. Cliffs Notes, formed in 1958 by a Lincoln, Nebraska Company presents summaries of many works of literature (The Associated Press). Professors found that students were often reading these summaries instead of reading the entire works. Students then plagiarized these summaries to prepare term papers. Some universities, such as Villanova, have even decided to ban Cliffs Notes from being used within the University. However, Cliffs Notes were not as easily accessible as the Internet is. Now all the work of research and even Cliffs Notes has been replaced with simple online search engines and cut-and-paste word-processing tools. Previously, a large number of people were able to resist the temptation. Now the Internet is everywhere. Students can find themselves easily signing online at 2am to buy term papers. Its much harder to resist the temptation because it is far more convenient than going to the book store. Ready-made term papers have become enticing to students seeking a lazy alternative to real school work. Sadly, many students do not feel the same sense of guilt when they obtain papers from the Internet (Cina). We are raising a generation of students who think that anything on the Internet is free and they should not give a thought to documenting them (Renard). It seems as though the free stuff attitude of Internet users has made students think that stealing research is more acceptable. Internet plagiarism has simply evolved into an institution, a pillar of education, a big study group and an endless archive of cut-and-paste essay components (Fritz). We are now faced with three types of Internet cheaters. The first, the unintentional cheater never learned how to properly use and document resources. These cheaters will usually admit their wrongdoing because they dont understand the alternative. A second type of cheater is the sneaky cheater. These students know what plagiarism is and that it is wrong, but they also know how to get away with it, so they plagiarize portions from research sites and portions from other student papers online. The all-or-nothing cheaters are students who wait too long before starting term papers and panic at the last minutes. These students often find the whole paper on the Internet, add their names, print it, and turn it in for a grade. This is the laziest form of Internet cheating and it is the easiest to detect (Renard). Term paper mills are nothing new, but their growth has exploded on the Internet.
